The
Tampa Bay Lightning were already on top of the world, having won the Staley Cup championship earlier this week. And later in the same week in Toronto, they also took home a good chunk of the NHL awards. Tampa Bay Lightning are Stanley Cup Champions!
The gruelling NHL playoff season came to a conclusion last night. The
Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the
Calgary Flames by a 2-1 score in game seven of their Stanley Cup finals. The game was tight from the very start with few shots on goal and a lot of tense, defensive play. The Flames did not really show much of an offensive spark until the last ten minutes and by then it was too late.

Calgary goes 'Cup Crazy'
The Calgary Flames have had quite a season. They finished 7th in the Western conference and have done much better in the playoffs than anyone expected. And the fans in Calgary deserve a lot of credit. The Flames hadn't made it past the first round since their last Stanley Cup victory in 1989, so the fans in Calgary are in uncharted territory. They have packed the Saddledome and Calgary streets after many of their playoff wins. One of the more amazing things of the playoffs happened during game 2 of the finals. The Saddledome had over 20,000 packed in for the game and hundreds had to be turned away. But the kicker of course is that the game wasn't even in Calgary, 20k people came to watch the game on the arena scoreboard! No matter what comes out of this series, it is quite clear that hockey fans in Calgary (and Canada in general) are probably more hockey crazy than anywhere in the world.
