World Cup exhibition games get underway
There may not be NHL hockey this fall, but hockey fans will definitely see some high caliber hockey at the World Cup this September. Even as many Russian players are skipping this tournament, the Canadian and American teams will be amongst the favourites. The two squads are also playing three exhibition games as a warm up for the big tournament.
Players association and league continue CBA talks
The NHLPA and the NHL owners have not had many discussions about the soon to expire collective bargaining agreement (CBA). We know that the owners have taken the extreme position of a hard salary cap while the players have countered with some token salary rollbacks but no real change to the current system.
This past week saw only their third negotiating session in six weeks, during which the NHLPA formally rejected six proposed concepts put forth by the league that were discussed in the previous two meetings. With less than 30 days to go before the existing CBA expires, the chances of the NHL season getting underway as scheduled are not looking very good.
